Greetings Sun City Democrats,
Our bylaws give me the opportunity to report to our members all that our club accomplished in 2021. Keeping over 500 members when for much of the year we were unable to meet in person was itself a major accomplishment. Many thanks to you who kept the faith and your membership through these trying times.
January found us still meeting by Zoom for monthly meetings and happy hours, but with everyone becoming vaccinated, in late April we had our first in-person event, happy hour on the patio at Mulligan’s. April also featured Beto O’Rourke speaking to our monthly meeting and recording a promo for our PAC.
Then in May, we had our annual picnic, held two months earlier than previously for cooler weather. In June we gave our PAC a kick-off with our first ever Flag Day celebration. By year's end those of us who generously contributed allowed us to net over $23,000 and give $10,000 to the Williamson County Democratic Party’s Coordinated Campaign, which will support all of our Democratic candidates in the November 2022 election.
Monthly meetings in June at last returned to the ballroom and meeting in person, with us all vaccinated, masked and distanced for safety. And we began emphasizing the pledge of allegiance’s promise of liberty and justice by shouting “FOR ALL.”
Over the summer our then Activists Chair Marette Reid led a successful drive for contributions to purchase backpacks needed by asylum seekers at the border. She raised over $2,500, purchased the backpacks and delivered them to El Paso. Thank you for your support of this worthy cause.
Our PAC held its first fundraiser for the 2022 campaign cycle in October. It featured an address from Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa and an impromptu presentation from Co-Executive Director Jamarr Brown, when Chairman Hinojosa’s flight was delayed. We also were entertained by the music of Eric Hanke and Paul Morris. That event raised over $8,000 after expenses.
In November we elected the board for 2022-23 and amended the bylaws to combine the offices of club Treasurer and PAC Treasurer. The year ended with our annual holiday party.
We ended the year with over $8,000 in our club bank account, $1,100 more than we began the year with. The club is on firm financial footing. We also ended the year with nearly half of our 2021 members having paid dues for 2022.
Let’s move forward into 2022 and commit to making it a Happy Blue Year!
